I (Nick) just spent the weekend at sea with BirdLife people searching for one of the world's rarest birds: the Fiji Petrel. It's only been seen a handful of times ever, and we aimed to attract birds to the boat using smelly fish chum.
The seas were very heavy and most of us felt pretty dire on the second day.
Despite our best efforts, and three days looking, we didn't spot the bird. We did see lots of other fine feathered friends, but the Fiji Petrel remains hidden for another day.
For me the best bits were the fish. I caught a 22 lb Dorado on the way over to Gau island (where we surveyed from) and in the evening we swam with Manta Rays in the bay. On the way home we spotted a Marlin following the boat. Something for a future trip perhaps...
