101 things to do on a weekend

After four Suva weekends back-to-back, Nat and I are on a concerted weekend-away-athon at present...

The first one is best shown through the following little video. We went to the other side of Viti Levu with Hannah and Bert to hike Fiji’s second highest mountain of Batilamu, just above the small village of Abaca in Koroyanitu National Park.

It was a long weekend for us, and we spent Saturday hiking to the small hut on the summit we stayed the night. We has great views down to Nadi and across to the island chain that runs out north-west from here.

In Sunday we plodded back down to the village and found the water wasn’t running in our lodge. No problem with the waterfalls and plunge pools provided by Mother Nature on the doorstep to cool down and wash off our plentiful sweat.

Meals were provided in the village in the traditional manner of sitting on woven floors mats on the floor as kids play around you and stare at the whiteys.

Take a look – password bula as always.

The next weekend was the polar opposite in term of luxury. We had a night in one of Fiji’s plushest resorts – The Intercontinental (sounds like a missile). This was to celebrate two weddings – ours two years ago, and Chris and Aey's which was happening that very day in Bangkok. We toasted the Gride and Broom with bubbly and ate our body-weight in fabulous food.

I’m now typing this up from our current weekend on Naigani Island where we’ve come for two days diving. Just an hour ago we were 20 meters down looking at all the glorious fishes whilst trying to remain neutrally buoyant. It’s been another perfect weekend in Fiji for us, and one of our best visits to the island to date (and that’s saying something). The weather is sunny with clear blue skies, the sea crystal clear, and the staff uncommonly well organised.

Things aren’t slowing down here though… Next weekend it’s off to see Holly in Sydney, then a potential three day hike across Viti Levu for me whilst Nat recovers from a week away with work on a coral identification course with work (see also being paid to dive and have fun…), then Nat heads off to Vanua Levu (the other big island) for a month of diving surveys which run till Christmas. During which time I’m going to Vanuatu for eight days of walking, diving and looking at exploding volcanoes. Really*

It’s all go here in the big run up to Christmas!

*Type “Tanna volcano” into YouTube and you’ll see what’s on offer. (Do not do this if you’re my mother!)
