Money and awards for BirdLife in Fiji

After more than a year of slogging, we had really some good news for BirdLife in Fiji this week.

The first was my biggest funding to date from The David and Lucile Packard Foundation (HP Computer people). They've agreed to give BirdLife $US 500,000 to remove rats from a number of islands in Fiji, French Polynesia, Cook Islands and Palau. Much needed money which will go a long way out here in the deep blue.

The second good news was in Rio, Brazil. Milly and one of our local community group members have been at a big global UN meeting for the last week, and last night picked up an "Equator Prize" for their conservation work. In the audience was the Prime Minister of Fiji, lots of donors and the award was given by Ed Norton (him from the films I'm told). Great for Milly and the BirdLife Fiji team, and something we're looking to captilaze on through more funding. We'll I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't try.

You can read more about the award if you're interested on BirdLife's website here: http://www.birdlife.org/community/2012/06/fijian-sisi-flies-long-way-receive-un-award/

Now, how much does a rat trap cost...
